The joys of doppler shift

Couldn’t sleep again last night, didn’t hit the wine, just stayed on MSN talking to Al, which kept Jamie awake so was a plus. The array allocing stuff I did yesterday seems to work, so that’s hopefully the end of the iPhone5 problems. Still don’t have one, but now ordered one from the Apple store on 2-3 weeks delivery.

So cleaner arrived on time, got mugged by the dog again then cleaned. Needs a bit of refinement, but she’ll get there. So today working on Octree, which was a success pretty much off the bat. Then tidied up a few bugs that had crept in. Then it was on to doppler shift. For those that don’t know that’s how the frequency changes depending on velocity and direction. That’s the weird police siren thing you get when the car goes past you. Anyway, coded it all up. Didn’t work. Tried it on iOS, didn’t work, played around with tons of stuff and went through lots of docs. Got bored and checked it in. Then worked out I was using a stereo source…doppler and positioning only works on mono sources, change the source, all worked fine. So tomorrow it’s doing a decent sample for that and then sound cones, which are even more strange.

Walked the dog. Went to the gym, ran for 63 minutes today. Watched a very interesting document about a plane crash, well a plane they actually crashed and monitored. Now it’s on to torture porn, choice of two tonight.

Do you have the iPhone5 in stock, yes. Can I buy one, no. Bastards.

Got a mail from Al about the iPhone5 crash, looks like it’s an issue with alignment on the new arm processor. So spent the bulk of the day writing array allocators to fix the problem.

Tried to get hold of an iPhone5. O2 stock checker said they had some in Clifton. So off I trotted. “Do you have the iPhone5 32GB in stock?”, “Yes, sir”, “Here’s £619”. “Oh, sorry I can’t sell one to you”, “What?”, “I can only sell it on a 24 month contract.”. Tossers. Then I came back and found they had them in stock just up the road so could have saved petrol for the same argument.

So a bit of a ‘null’ day really. Walked the dog. Went to gym, ran for 62 minutes. Ate salad. Got a couple of new films in. Cleaner should be back tomorrow.

Another one of my reviews is up on trip advisor “La Piazza Aztec West”

Were ‘Atomic Kitten’ really about interlocking young cats?

So spent most of the day working on a lock free ring buffer. Code that I actually wrote years ago, but now converted to iOS / Android. Now lock free things depend on atomics, iOS not so much an issue, Android on the other hand doesn’t really do atomics and as for 64 bit atomics forget it. So that was an interesting one to solve but got there in the end. Didn’t really do much else.

Watched a good film last night “The Hunger Games”, ok so I’ve read the book and enjoyed it, but the film was a pretty good representation.

Walked the dog. Did a home check right by the gym for a lovely lady and a lovely existing dog. As it was right next to the gym I had no excuse really not to go although I said I wouldn’t. So ran for an hour and one minute. Now have sores under my arms where they were rubbing against my vest. War wounds.

Come back, ate salad. I was going to watch the new Red Dwarf, but due to a timing clash it won’t be ready until later. It’s torture porn night, so got a film ready.

Jamie’s birthday tomorrow, no presents, no card, welcome to your future, it’s all down hill from now on.

Solved the cleaning situation, dog friendly cleaner starts Monday. Nothing wrong with the old cleaner except she seems to be working all hours and I can’t really blame her for avoiding my bathroom. I have no idea where those brown stains come from.

In laws down tomorrow. Deep breaths. Could be worse, could be my mother. Taking old mattress down tip. Going to cinema. Eating out. At least I get the chance to give a restaurant an appalling review, although this one is usually pretty good.

Darwin had the right idea

Today I started doing battle with iOS and XCode again, thankfully my colleague knew what the problem was so managed to produce test flight builds again, although I can’t add any new devices without cocking the whole key chain thing up, so I’ll avoid that if possible.

Then it was on to some PS3 work, well an SDK update, which basically means lots of downloading, building installers and hanging around for compiles, it’s a pretty brain dead activity, but I was having a pretty brain dead kind of day.

Met ugly fat bitch with abusive husband again while out walking dog (this time without husband, as he was probably back inside due to his asbo). By god she’s got a gob like a fog horn, this time her dog was off attacking someone else’s while her teenage daughter was stood in the middle of the path blocking it’s entirety with her hips while texting. There must be something to be said about removing these peoples benefits and then praying for a harsh winter, natural selection can then do it’s thing. Mind you there would then be certain parts of the country like ghost towns.

Cleaner hasn’t turned up in ages, I’m now up to me knees in dog hair. Jamie refuses to put anything into dishwasher or wash anything. He thinks if he just leaves stuff out it will magically be put away. It won’t. I can go all week with one cup, one knife and one t-shirt, so I’ll always win that battle.

Here’s my trip adviser review of the WOW Bodrum Resort

Went to gym, ran, unexciting. Played with dog. Now it’s time for salad and the Singapore GP (Yes, I’m still getting through it). Then I must carry on with that rather gruesome film I was watching in bed, and I don’t mean Jamie sleeping.

You don’t need a 4×4 you want a boat

The morning started off fairly dull. Made it to work on time, that’s only because the dog wasn’t here to be fed. Picked up a couple of emails but nothing urgent requiring my immediate attention. So spent the bulk of the morning working on iOS stuff. Apple are determined to make a fairly simple job, fairly traumatic.

Lunchtime, needed to do the shopping. First time I’ve shopped in Tesco at that time for years, never again. It was full of young mothers who wouldn’t move and old people who couldn’t fucking move. Sorry but why do you have to stare at a pile of noodles for so fucking long? Are you seeing the Virgin Mary in pasta? Pick them up, shove them in your trolly and fuck off out of my way.

So, unpacked the shopping, had lunch and got back to work. Later it was time to pick the dog up. Now, we’ve had a little bit of rain yesterday, going down the back route I was suddenly confronted by a field full of water and lots of drivers in 4×4’s looking smug. Then I saw white van man come corr-erring round the corner and aqua planing into the field. After I finished laughing I decided to turn round and find a different route. Still, several times I was up over the radiator in water. Finally got to the kennels, picked up dog, she appeared to have eaten through her harness which means they left her in it for too long when I dropped her off. They did bath her, but I think it’s time to find a new kennel, they are very expensive and a pain to get to.

Came back home, back to work. Went to gym. New Body Combat, this one’s pretty good. Came home, did work. iOS still continues to be an ass and won’t work properly on TestFlight. Had salad and I’m now back to the Singapore GP qualifying. Feeling quite tired so may head for an early night. Must eat a banana.

Today I actually played my own game

Ok, so today was going to be fairly busy and all over the place. So started out going through a list of bugs / suggestions on the mobile game. After I did that, decided it was time to give it a full play through. I don’t tend to play heavily through my own games as you are always a little bit too close to them. But this one was designed by someone else and they’d created all the levels. So I started out on level one and played it all the way through to the end, without cheating and without doing any in-app purchases. And I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Being an old Red Alert fan some bits reminded me of the strategy in that. Ah, but whats the game…..well you’ll just have to wait, only a couple of weeks to go on that front.

Took Sasha to the kennels, traffic was horrendous. About an hour round trip. After I eventually managed to free her from the various bondage straps she completely ignored me and buggered off with the girl from the kennel. So much for loyalty. Then came back and did more playing. Missed Pump tonight as I couldn’t really justify taking another couple of hours off after just taking an hour off and only being back for a few minutes.

I went and did a home check instead for a young couple who are after a cat. They live on a really busy main road, but would be ideal for an older cat. They have a lovely garden.

So there we go, wine o’clock. No gym and tomorrow off to ‘Proms in the park’, followed by Sunday at ‘Party in the park’. A lot of things in parks basically. I’m sure it will be a fun weekend. I’m suspecting a reasonably busy week work wise next week though.

The Agila 1.2, why?

Today the nice man from Vauxhall turned up with my car. It now has a nose. I looked up underneath and there’s a bolt missing, a fixing missing in the middle and various plates hanging off. Also with the wheel on full lock, it banged into the wheel arch. So back to Vauxhall it went. To be fair to them it came back straight form a 3rd party body shop. The actual bumper repair has been done very well.

Apparently it’s all been fixed now so will be back tomorrow.

They left me this white Agila. It’s very ugly. Like a small high box on wheels. The boot is the size of a glove box. It does have four doors. The gear lever feels like a clunky piece of plastic connected by a broken Biro to a hair-dryer of an engine. It’s reverse gear is where my 6th gear is, which could lead to some interesting high speed gears flying up from the engine. Power wise it isn’t going to scare a speed camera in a 20mph zone. The brakes feel more like the pads are being grasped gently by a couple of dusters, so not to frighten the car into stopping.

It has no extras, no air-con and no redeeming features. If you want to carry four people in discomfort then it’s probably the car for you. The Vauxhall Agila….why?

In server news I’ve made a bit of progress by setting up two lan cards to bridge and then set that to filter through the firewall. I was able to access all windows and samba shares, so making progress at last.

Work wise, finished off iOS audio session handling and started off doing a windows version of the Apple Lossless codec.

Apple, ok, I quite like your codecs

Spent the day working on iOS codec’s again. This time got the better of them. So now support ima4, m4a and Apple lossless. Got lots of stuff still to tidy up, but it’s further to the end than the beginning. Next week I may take a break and look at some PS3 work that’s been looming in the back of my mind for a while (and the boss has noticed).

Went to the gym after buying crickets (I have lizards, will post pictures one day), ran 45 minutes at 8 miles an hour. Now my calf’s have seized up, I think the only thing that will unseize them is lubrication, in the form of wine.

In server news I set up yet another one of my eBay PC’s with Ubuntu and installed iPerf. This one is called iPerf2. I’m still getting 943mBps throughput. I also got hold of a cygwin version of iperf, so tested on Windows boxes, got around 840mBps. On my netbook though through wi-fi I’m only getting about 16, so need to investigate that further.

Oh and it’s raining again.

Well I guess it could have been worse

Got a reply from the local main dealer about my bumper situation. It isn’t going to be expensive as I thought, but still advised to check ebay. I checked ebay and about two dozen parts resourcers and breakers, not a sausage. I’d have more luck trying to source an Arden Blue unicorn horn. So it’s back to Vauxhall for the solution, which I spose is the same as saying that a good way to lose weight is my chopping your arm off. I’ll try and organise it tomorrow. The bumper that is, not the arm removal.

I didn’t go to the gym today as I currently still can’t feel my neck from yesterdays karting exploits. So I spent the evening finally repairing a dead PC that’s been sat on my bench for the best part of a month. Turned out the PSU was fine and the motherboard was up the swanny. Anyway, now have a fixed PC and a box of blown bits.

Also got round to watching the Olympic opening ceremony. Quite impressive, the parade seems to go on forever.

Spent the day working on iOS codec’s, which for once, considering it involved using XCode was actually a fairly painless operation. It even worked.

OpenAL continues to be an ass, but iOS also presents some issues

So now the OpenAL saga continues. This time when testing on an iPod touch. As it has the power of a squashed tomato, I was getting buffer under runs when trying to decode about six MP3 tracks at once. So what happens when you get a buffer under run, well it queues the buffers as normal, and yes, marks all the bloody things as processed. So the work round for this was was to check the number of queued buffers, if that’s zero then call rewind, this resets the internal marker and every ones happy.

Sharing file handles between threads…on iOS don’t do it. It gets upset. Don’t open file on thread A, then read it using the same handle on thread B (they arn’t reading at the same time, it’s just opened on one then read on another). That threw me for quite a while as it was randomly working then failing. Still all sorted now. Now the next job is iOS hardware MP3 decoding.

In server news I’ve redone my apache configs to use the actual domain names now. Also added pop3 ssl in about 10 minutes, I’ve kind of got the hang of these things now. Final job on the server I think is to configure the UPS stuff, but can’t do that until it’s in place and can’t do that until I’ve reconfigured my mother (well her laptop mail setup).

I did head out on the bike, but by the time I got to the end of the road the weather looked very miserable, so took the dog for a walk instead. Now I’m going to have a bath and watch the Olympics opening ceremony.

The dog has a new pool. This is it before she probably ends up eating it.
