So what happened

I was sat down watching crap telly last night, fiddling on the laptop connected to the server over SSH. I was trying to get fail2ban to work with wordpress, so it would ban an IP based on a bad login. So when fiddling I was checking the log files and it was showing that iptables were not working properly. After much Googling I ended up trying to reinstall the kernel. This did indeed reinstall, unfortunately it didn’t install the network drivers which apparently were part of some extension package. So I was now left with a system that booted but had no network connectivity. So travelled upstairs and got on the console. Ended up restoring from a backup. Didn’t work. Tried various restores. Didn’t work. Tried deleting the /boot directory and restoring that, except it wasn’t on the backup. So now had a system that wouldn’t even boot and just sat there at a grub prompt. Bugger. So reinstalled the OS as a clean install. Thankfully it only took a few minutes. System then booted with full networking. Except now of course it was a blank system. So tried restoring the backup again and then rebooted. All came back up and instantly started working again. Relief. So expanded the volume and checked a few things. This wasn’t bad activity considering I’d downed two bottles of wine during the panic.

So today I just monitored the logs. Thankfully everything was fine, as a bonus fail2ban was now working fine. So I added the wordpress jails and all seems to work.

I’m not going to touch it again now until I come back.

I’m sure Conor Maynard is stalking me

Today I was working on collision, which isn’t the most exciting task in the world. Mind you I made a pretty good job of it as it’s almost finished and I scheduled a week for it.

Went for a run. It’s fucking cold. Ordered some more paint stripper. Is it odd that I’ve ordered 40Kg of paint stripper and 40Kg of dog food. Lets not get them mixed up, mind you sticking the dog’s Cherios to the wall would be quite a challenge.

Did some more Japanese lessons. They replied pretty quickly to an email I sent them to say that the words in the video didn’t match up to the words in the word list. They even corrected it. Now I suppose they can justify their £120 or what ever it is for the course. Mind you I feel I know considerably more about that language now than I ever did before, especially things like particles, which just don’t really exist in English.

Almost finished the Shiraz, added the first part of the finings, need to add the second part tomorrow and then it’ll be ready to bottle in a couple of days.

Watched a lot of crap telly. Last thing I watched was Graham Norton, who had Conor Maynard on. This kid seems to be haunting me in every form of media I switch on. I’m sure the talentless little shit lives in Radio One, every Saturday morning the chirpy little fuck is there. Sure thing though, in a couple of years he’ll be playing Butlins next to Chesney Hawkes and Dollar. David ‘burger’ Van Day….I really must go along to one of those one day.

Anyway, more collision type fun tomorrow, after Sasha goes to day care.

20 litres of paint stripper and 26 bottles of wine later

I actually got up vaguely early for a Sunday, well up by 10 anyway. So started on the mass paint stripping. By 7PM I had got through 20 litres of paint stripper, done one and a half walls and turned my finger nail yellow. Everything is now wrapped up in cling film, hopefully it will all dry properly and the pain will come off. I reckon I need another hundred quids worth of the stuff to finish it off.

After my epic stripping I started sterilizing wine bottles. Then bottled the Chardonnay. Managed to get 26 bottles out of it. So that’s now sat in the garage. There’s a little bit left in the bottom of the barrel for a few odd glasses, one of which I’m about to have now with a nice bath before the curry arrives.

The Chardonnay looks to be a success

An oddly busy day, yet oddly not a great deal done. So got up after studying pizza recipes. Had to do a house check for a cat. So walked the dog and weighed her, the diet is working. Then did the shopping, time was rapidly creeping on. Dived back, ate some toast and then shot out again. Did the home check, then popped into ToolStation to pick up a few bits. Then went round mothers and listened to her talk about herself. She said she may go up a ladder tomorrow to fix her roof felt, so there’s a good probability that we can kill her off yet.

Came back and sterilised a load of kit. Syphoned off the Chardonnay and gave it a quick taste. It’s very good, very drinkable, but need to let it mature a while yet. Also started to clear the red, that’s looking good to. Not sure which one to do next, may be a Pinot? Anyway, did the accounts. Now time for a shower and then I’m making my own pizza, this could be interesting….

That’s 30 litres of Chardonnay and 5 litres of Shiraz brewing

Didn’t start the day quite as early as I planned but still felt pretty good. Got straight on with work, some physics to do and then a bit of AI. It was a varied if not entirely productive way work wise (sometimes no matter how hard you try it just goes like that some times). So need to do a bit more on it tomorrow but that will probably be the end of this little project.

Went out for a run (Jamie’s turn to walk the dog). Came back, did some more work, went to the early evening. Then it was a bit of a mass sterilization session. Bottled the Strawberry and added the oak to it, I’ll leave that to sit for a few weeks and see if it needs further sweetening. Then started up 30 litres of Chardonnay (not a cheap one either) and 5 litres of Shiraz (okay, I didn’t break the bank, I’m not a fan of red). Red is brewing, white just needs to come up to temperature before I add the yeast. Then it’s just sit back and wait. And hope this time it doesn’t explode.

That’s pretty much filled my evening, so now I’m going to have a shower and then eat salad and watch crap TV. Avoiding the wine, which is a bit odd as I spent all evening with the bloody stuff. Early start tomorrow, Sasha off to daycare and cleaners are coming. Just need to take out the bins now.

Apparently the UK average annual wine consumption is 37 bottles per person. Jamie doesn’t drink it much, can I have his share?

This morning I didn’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to take the dog to day care. I did however have to get up and answer the door for a wine delivery. This is just the Tesco cheap stuff, so it’ll be going to my sister’s, while I drink the good stuff.

Today, once again working on the mobile game update. Only a few bits more to do. I did add something really fun to it though….there’s nothing wrong with chopping peoples heads off. Managed to ignore certain people all day and also rant at a few others.

Walked the dog. Jamie had one of his LBF’s (little blue friends) round, where they played Nintendo and probably fapped a lot.

Went to the gym. Ran. Bought some crickets for the lizards. Filled the dishwasher and did some dishes. Cleaned some wine glasses.

Well, that was the excitement of my day, once again, nothing really interesting happened. I have a feeling something will do soon though.

It’s torture porn night, so wine and dodgy DVD with the dog later.

Wine tasting and drain cleaning, don’t get the two confused

Ok so yesterday started off with the usual process of getting up late. The proceeded to do just about everything backwards. Had lunch then took the dog for a walk. Then did the shopping, on the way back went to John Lewis and bought a posh cheese board.

We went out this evening to Lisa & Andy’s with my sister and Shaun. Shaun has just passed his driving test. Anyway, we were going for a wine tasting which I bought on a Groupon months and months ago. So little fat man turned up with two very large luggage type cases full of wine. I got given a bottle of red for the booking (which wasn’t bad as the whole thing only cost £19). He asked us all what sort of wine we drank then we proceeded to sample 13 bottles, it was all very educational and we all got merrily pissed. At the end of it I ordered for hundred quids worth, which I’m sure pleased little fat man no end, as he then left all the sample bottles for us to kill off, including a rather nice New Zealand white at 20 quid a bottle that I was rather partial to. Shaun drove home, I think he drove fine, I really can’t remember.

Now this morning as usual after a fairly heavy session I was up like a shot at 6AM. Couldn’t really get back to sleep so watched the X-Factor at 7:30 then pottered around a bit doing various dull things. I then ventured out into the garden where I spent the next three hours chopping the bits of tree that I felled last week into the wheelie bin. Then I decided it was time to check the drains again as the kitchen sink is running slow. Shoved a hose pipe up from the outside towards the kitchen, gummed up with shit (literally), so spent the next three hours jetting raw sewage all other the place, I still haven’t got it completely unblocked but it’s certainly running better than it was. I’ve poured a load of drain cleaner down it, but I imagine it’s going to need another pretty serious session. That’s Jamie and his bloody fried food.

Mother turned up (she was invited) when I was covered in shit (again literally). I washed off then presented her with various different coffees. I wasn’t overly in a social mood at this point, so she didn’t hang around long. But did delivery fruit cake.

Then did the accounts and paid everyone. Trying to work out how I’ve knocked up three grand on my credit card this month and then decided it was because I keep buying stuff. So then sat down and bought some more, mainly Jamie’s Christmas presents. Got a few more to get but at least I made a start.

I need to order all the heating electrics next week and get a start on that, or the fitting date will be round before I know it. Anyway now its wine and bath time, then the US Grand Prix I think.

Had a bit of a bad head this morning, I blame the cheese rolls

Started off on this damn iOS6 iPhone5 crash again after I helped out with a PS3 render crash. Didn’t get any further on iPhone5 even after loading debug symbols it still all looked bollocks. Spent the bulk of the rest of the day helping out the render team (both of them, actually they’ve just added a third but I haven’t spoken to him yet). Finally got to do some of my own work about eight thirty this evening.

So did work, went to gym and did body pump, I was supposed to do some running afterwards, but quite frankly I just couldn’t be arsed. It’s my big old fattening pizza tonight so I should have done the extra, but my legs hurt, my shoulder hurts and I’m feeling quite tired, so looking forward to a bath, phoning my mother (not really looking forward to that bit) eating pizza and falling asleep in front of the TV.

Need to get up fairly early tomorrow (well early tomorrow) as Sarah wants to pick up a couple of bits in Tesco with me. I’ve also two home checks to fit in somewhere, plus I want to get some gardening in this weekend and loads of other stuff.

Last nights film was good, my opinions here “The last house on the left”

So anyway, bath time, and yes, I’ve already poured the wine.

Why have one blog when you can have two?

So today (well this evening, as I did do some work earlier) I’ve set up my other blog. It’s for movie reviews, you’ll have to guess the URL for the moment. So now everything is set up and working, still need to twiddle a few things regards DNS and MX records, but really now it’s all about adding content.

Oh and to be consistent, I went to the gym, but have failed to drink any wine yet…

I also did a ‘home check’ for Hollyhedge Animal Santuary as a volunteer. This just means I check to make sure they have a secure garden and live where they say they live. I get some sense of well being from it all. If your thinking of getting a dog or a cat, please don’t go to a breeder, visit a rehoming centre and save an animals life.

The wonderful Hollyhedge animal sanctuary

Right now its defo time for Salad, and may be some of that wine.
