Her strip light is flickering – call out the marines

For some reason I started very late. Anyway, got on with it. Once again I had one job to do and actually did it plus a bit more, so can’t complain. Weather is still shit. I’ve got a couple of bugs to trace tomorrow plus look into another small optimisation. Next week I need to start looking at shader resource tables. The principle is very simple, the implementation will be very frustrating, but hopefully all worth it in the end.

Walked Sasha, Dillon wasn’t interested. Went to Spin. Span. Did more work. Managed to get PhotoShop to work on the iMac. Ordered another memory card for the camera. Trying to get an external mic but everyone is out of stock.

Mother sent me an email to say her strip light is flickering. That must be the cue to either send in the marines or to ignore her for a couple of weeks. I think I’ll take the latter option.

Sitting at a desk all day writing computer games doesn’t make me depressed, listening to you bang on does.

Woke up at 6:30, took Sasha to daycare. Massively windy outside, I heard a recycling box fall over. I looked out the window and saw the women next door in a cardie, in the pouring rain, picking up my dog food tins. I let her get on with it. Went back to bed where I was then rudely awaken by a courier. Dillon escaped and went on a bit of a tour. I then ended up outside in the rain in pants trying to call the dog in.

Eventually started work. Had one task to do day, which I completed. I have another one to do tomorrow and then another complete batch of hell, where I have to do shader resource tables. These will be a massive pain in the ass, but will hopefully all be worth it.

Took Jamie to the bank. Picked up Sasha.

I now have my laminate flooring power saw. Also managed to buy a Joby Gorillapod from E-bay.

I read one of my mothers emails to a friend of her’s (yes I get a copy of all her emails, the NSA have got nothing on my abilities). She said “Oh, Tim’s learning to fly a helicopter, but before he can fly solo he has to pass a medical, he failed it due to the antidepressants he’s taking. Sitting at a desk writing computer games all day, would drive anyone to depression.” Actually it doesn’t, I’m usually pretty happy when I’m working, it taxes my mind, it can be quite stressful but it doesn’t make me depressed. Listening to her bang on makes me depressed.

Went to Pump. Increased my weights. It hurt. Drank a protein shake. Eaton too many sweets. I’ve upgraded to the latest FCPX now, all seems good. Haven’t heard from B&Q, god knows where my flooring is.

The “Boyfriend Tag”

So finally at about 3AM the iMac decided to compress the bloody video and upload it to YouTube. There was then a bit of panic as it kept coming up unavailable. Then I worked out that it was encoding everything in five hundred different formats in the background. I then added the annotations and finally went to bed.

Woke up sober yet again, I’m getting the hang of it now. Cracked on with work which was mainly syncing and testing stuff. It’s all working now. Also did a bit at the end, which was another optimisation, but I need to think through that a bit more carefully.

Ended up finishing later than I planned. Went to the gym and did a run, but by god was I knackered. Came back and installed the iMac memory upgrade. Worked on second attempt after I gave it a bloody great shove. Then I upgraded the iMac to Mavericks. That all went okay. I’ll try and stick the latest FCPX on it tomorrow. It seems to be a bit more spritely now it has 12GB Ram. Jamie has lost my memory card. He still hasn’t cleared the plates and glasses in the bathroom. I posted another picture on Facebook which he asked me to take down as it was ’embarrassing’, why doesn’t he just clear it up? Updated the server, de-flead Dillon and updated WordPress.

So anyway, go watch my new video, “The Boyfriend Tag”.

Remember you can follow me on twitter @mannmansion

Captain James sent me a text, possibly flying Sunday. I ordered all the laminate flooring for the kitchen, plus a special power saw. That’ll be fun.

Oh the MacBook Air finally needed charging. And in about half an hour it’s gone back up to 45%.

Three days in and all is still good

So once again woke without any kind of hangover. Still was very tired and achy though, due to yesterdays laminate flooring exercise. Powered up and cracked on with work. Got into it all fairly quickly today. Had a few bugs to fix and then on with multi-threading common constant buffers. All went according to plan even if I didn’t get quite as much done as I anticipated. It’s all working anyway, so thats good.

Walked the dogs, it was freezing.

Went to Combat, that seemed to fly by. Came back and did some more work. Had to do a data build so got on with finishing the video. It’s now all done and uploading. My new backup drive arrived and that’s running at the same time so it’s taking forever. My new tripod has also arrived, which is still in the box from Amazon. Need to start making a shopping list of trip requirements.

I’m looking at a Tamron lens 24-70 F2.8, so will be good in low light but also have great depth of field. If I manage the entire month off the bottle then I’ll get it.

I will not be defeated by laminate flooring

So woke up, with no bad had. Had breakfast, had meds. Fancied a bum, but that wasn’t going to happen. So bang on midday I started the great laminate flooring adventure. I was a learning experience. I made quite a few fuck ups along the way, including starting at the wrong end. Still, some ten hours later it’s finished and it looks pretty good. I haven’t done the beading or the door strips yet. I had some fun long the way. The circular saw broke, the jigsaw broke, the chop saw broke. And the hand saw I was left with is now so blunt it’s ended up in the bin. There’s a couple of bits I’m not overly thrilled with, but I reckon I can cover most of those up with beading. I’ve decided that as this stuff is still on offer at B&Q I’ll buy enough to do the kitchen. I’m also going to invest in a laminate flooring saw, hopefully it won’t break down and will make the job easier. If that’s a success I may look into redoing the lounge and dining room (yes, I know I’ve only just finished that), but it shows all the mud, so would prefer something a little darker. Plus I want to put in speaker cables and stuff. I have a DIY budget, so it will come out of that, there’s about two grand in it at the moment.

At about 11PM I collapsed into the shower, then cooked tea. Chicken fried rice. I watched Top Gear, then my back finally decided it had enough. So what have I drunk today? Well, three cups (or was it four) cups of coffee, one cup of tea and about two pints. Two pints? Yes, two pints of water. And feel fine.

Oh, still haven’t charged this laptop.

If you will spray paint your bloody logo over council property then yes they will fine you

So woke up on day one. Took some measurements. Fed the hordes, ate breakfast, went back to bed. Had an odd dream. Jamie had received a letter from the council fining him £2,700 for spraying his channel logo over council property. I did have a go at him and say that if he did do that then he deserves the fine. And I took y meds yesterday as well.

Walked the dogs, had lunch. Got all the tools in from the garage for tomorrow. Walked into town, failed to make any purchases. Picked up a woodworking square from ToolStation. Popped into mothers. Came back and did lots of accountancy type things. Didn’t have a bath, had a shower. Made food, chicken, noodles, stuff. Well basically it was a chow-mein. Ate it with a couple of pints of water.

Now typing this up in bed completely sober. Jamie is asleep downstairs on the couch. No we haven’t had a barney, he just fell asleep down there while I was watching the telly, so I left him to it. We don’t have sex in February anyway.

So laminate flooring tomorrow. Followed by more video editing. Must put my old camera on eBay as it’s free listings day. Then make food, eat food, probably with more water.

Oh, and I still haven’t charged this laptop.

Time to swap wine for protein shakes

Started as normal. Actually I got some really good work done today so very pleased. Not sure if it will improve performance a lot, will have to wait and see on that one.

The weather is shit.

Went to the gym and did Pump. Then did a session with Laverne afterwards.

So that’s it then. Last day of January. So February the plan is not to drink and not to eat pizza. Four weeks, how hard can it be?

I got some cool FCPX plug-ins

Started late, well finished late last night so didn’t mind. Bit of a dicky stomach as well, but that soon passed. Cracked on with work. An interesting day on that, now all the grunt boring work has been done I’m on to the frustrating debugging stuff. During some dull compiling moments I looked up some Final Cut Pro X plug-ins. I wasn’t happy with one section of my video, I wanted a shatter effect for an explosion. After a good Google I found a company that specialises in FCXP plug-ins. As usual with these things they seem to have a permanent discount available. I ended up getting three in the end, shatter, smoke and fire. I got the exact effect I was looking for with plenty of scope for playing around more.

Went to the gym and did Spin. Gave Laverne my power bill to see if she can do it any cheaper. Had a chat with her about doing the Friday thing on a regular basis. Came back, finished off work and then did some more video editing. Determined to get it all done by the end of the weekend. I’ve got a few ideas for some other videos.

Bloody cough seems to have made a bit of a come back, wish it would piss off.

I still haven’t charged this MacBook Air.

More strange dreams

Had a fairly restless night, mainly due to it being a ‘non pill’ day. I woke up at 4AM, couldn’t get back to sleep. Got up at 6:15 and took Dillon to daycare. Got back home and went to bed. Had a dream. This was a weird one. I was in the back of a car with my sister. The car was driving itself. I told Sarah (my sister) to take the steering wheel. Then in the background I heard a helicopter. It was doing an emergency landing. It crashed. The next thing I knew was that my mother was attempting to disconnect the fuel line. You’ve just got to love mind altering drugs.

Work today was mainly syncing code and data and making everything work again. All went fine, bit one hell of a long day, about twelve hours.

Did pump. Good fun.

Came back and in-between work did some more video editing. It’s almost complete now. A bit disappointed about the noise on the video, I think the ISO was set too high. Still it’s only my fourth video. Great fun doing the editing though.

One day I’ll need to charge this laptop

This morning started vaguely on time. Cracked on, it’s very tough going at the moment, but hopefully have it all sorted by the end of next week.

Managed to get everything done by early evening, so shut down and went to the gym. Ran for an hour. Came back and then spent a couple of hours editing the new video.

Ate salad. With pickled onions. I was supposed to no be drinking this week, so far failed abysmally.

Oh, doctor rang. We had a short discussion about coming off prozac, so that’s going ahead. Fuck knows what will happen there.

Liking this laptop a lot. It’s still very shiny. I’ve also still yet to plug it in to the mains.
