Can you generate something from nothing?

I’ll breeze over work as it was very dull, all about shader compiling. It finished with a compiler that was crashing and more questions than answers. I’ll give it one more day before I move on to something else if I don’t get any answers.

Nothing interesting happened. I went to Spin with Laverne. Did some video editing on my new video about our road trip.

Now to the title. It’s torture porn night, but I’m out of horror movies. I’d got hold of a copy of ‘Stand by me’ on blu-ray. This was a complete remaster in 1080p. Now I was quite interested in the fact it had a Dolby 5.1 sound track. This is one of my all time favourite films. Not just because I had a River Phoenix fetish (I met him once, story for another day). God I’d bang him so hard, if only he wasn’t dead. I remember that day, I woke up to the radio news. It was the day after halloween, he’d OD.’d on Heroin and cocaine outside the ‘Viper Room’, on Sunset strip. A venue that twenty years later I stood outside of. I was working at ‘System’s Reliability’ at the time. Anyway, back to the film. It’s on now. The video transfer is fantastic. Kiefer Sutherland looks about twelve, you forget that all you know him for now is ’24’. You also forget that even though it was directed by Rob Reiner, the acting is wooden and in some places bloody awful. River was quoted saying that he wished he was never in the film. It also starred Will Wheaton, who went on to do very little but have a weird part in Star-Trek next generation. Corey Feldman who went on to do a huge amount of films with Corey Haim, known as the ‘two Corey’s’. So looking back at the four actors in it, remembering this was made in I think 1985, one is dead, one is the friend of another one who’s dead, one went weird, grew very tall and disappeared with an alien and the other one I’ve never heard of again. Incidentally the film is based on a book, ‘The Body’, by Stephen King, bet you didn’t know that. It’s actually a short story, it contains two sub stories, one of which is about a pie eating contest which is on the film, the other one is about a dream sequence with lots of naked floating boys with placid penis’s, which isn’t, because it’s shit. I can’t remember the name of the book, it was something like, ‘Different seasons’. I reckon it probably holds the record though for the most amount of films generated from one book. ‘The Body’, got turned into ‘Stand By Me’. Then ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption’, got turned into one of the highest rated films of all time. ‘Apt Pupil’, got turned into what I thought was a very good film, but few have heard of, then there was, ‘The Breathing Method’, which I think was also turned into a film. I bet he made a few quid from that anyway. All his other films based on his books have been shit. Apart from perhaps, ‘Maximum Overdrive’, which had Halter Graham in it, someone else who I’d bang. Film still going, a very young John Cusack has just popped up playing Will Wheaton’s brother. The film is narrated by Richard Dreyfus, who was old then and is probably older now (okay, no probably in that).

After my mild digression, can you generate a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack from the original mono and make it sound good? If you can they haven’t managed it on this film.

It’s still very weird watching a film I was pretty much obsessed with some twenty-nine years later. Things have moved on a lot, however I sometimes feel that certain parts of me are still back in 1985.

Remember folks, if you like my completely incoherent wibblings on various bollocks, you can follow me on twitter @mannmansion or you can see me talking complete bollocks in the flesh on my YouTube channel.

So today the pre-processor was pissing me off

Spent a complete day swearing at shaders. Mainly it was issues of defining bits of text to something else. We have shaders written for DX9, I’m trying to compile them for a console using a completely different format. So lots of text manipulation. Which is more interesting than it sounds. I managed to get a very basic shader all working. Now one with a texture in is causing me issues. Still, I reckon it should all be working by the end of next week. I’ve reckoned that sort of thing before and a month later I’ve still been at it.

Didn’t sleep well last night, lots of sweating. Got up at 6:30 and took Sasha to daycare. Cleaners arrived, didn’t do too bad a job for once. May look into getting a new one after holiday, I think they are a bit dear for what I get.

Watched floor swelling, I think it’s near enough there now. Saw arrived, so I can have a bash at repairing it the weekend.

Picked up dog. Went to Body Pump, admired arms. Came back and did more work. Was planning on doing a video with Jamie but just ended up working late instead.

So I bought another saw

Got up to look at my swelling flooring. Ordered a small circular saw. It’s not for the flooring, it’s for removing Jamie’s head. Got an email to say that Penn & Teller was canceled. Which is rather annoying. Finished off doing shader stuff in the morning. In the afternoon I did shader stuff. At least it was on the compiler and not dull stuff, it was actually quite interesting.

Went to the gym and hit the cross trainer. Came back and reassembled the CX2 with the new body kit. That all works nicely. Then had salad, followed by macaroni cheese, then toast, then more cheese. For some reason I was very hungry. Tried to catch up on more television. USA trip is all slowly coming together. Costing a hell of a lot of money. It had a budget, I just can’t remember what it was and I’ve probably exceeded it anyway. Still got a hell of a lot of work to do before hand though.

I think we are planning on making a new video tomorrow.

Oh VPN you’re such a pain in the ass

Got up this morning to admire my flooring swelling up. Jamie doesn’t seem sorry enough, will have to talk to more twinks on Tinder. Then things slowly went from bad to worse. Spent probably the best part of three hours trying to connect to the bloody VPN. Ended up uninstalling the virus killer and pissing about with the firewall. Wasn’t having any of it. Ended up playing about with MTU settings, see what it does tomorrow. Then I had an awful job merging shader code, that took forever and still isn’t finished yet.

Walked Sasha. Went to Body Combat. Watched my floor swell in more places. I think I’ll just have to wait a while and see where it screws up, there are about five sections that need replacing at the moment. It’s annoying, will cost money, but at the end of the day no one died. Talking of which I spoke to my sister at combat, mothers still going.

Had a bit more success with the sat-nav though. Got it all set up with the USA maps, just managed to find a later set as well. Got all the hotels programmed in.

Going to watch the other half of a film tonight as I’ve had an awful day. Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive.

We’ve blocked your code as we think there may have been some fraudulent transactions

Yesterday started as normal, with me in bed. I did have to get up though to take the dogs out and then pop up to Staverton. Beautiful weather for once. Did another 1.3 hours, a few circuits, a high auto-rotation. Then some quick stops and some rather dramatic high speed ground manoeuvres, where I did indeed try to kill us. James actually swore, James never swears but apparently I did come very close to taking a pylon out. Took a full lot of head cam footage again which I’ve transferred to the Mac but haven’t had a chance to look at yet.

Popped in B&Q. Came back. We then sat down and started booking things for the trip. So hotels in Anaheim, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Boston, Washington DC and New York. Also booked tickets for a Vegas show. I lost count of how much I spent, mainly as I got through about two bottles of wine during the proceedings. I was due to cook, but couldn’t be assed so we ordered an Indian.

Woke up this morning to a phone call from a Scottish lady from Tesco bank, informing me that they thought they had detected fraudulent transactions. I said no it was perfectly normal to spend four hundred quid on helicopter lessons, about twenty in B&Q and then about a grand on hotels in the USA followed by a curry…in the same day. She upped my credit limit and unblocked the card.

As it was nice we did what all good gays do and went shopping. We actually did clothes shopping in Top Man. We never normally do this kind of thing together. I think Jamie was feeling fragile after I’d spent Friday nights bath chatting to an 18 year old called Jordan on Tinder. He worked in ‘PoundStretcher’. We also went in Halfords and picked up a new Sat-nav. I already have the USA maps on a memory card so shoved that in and all worked fine. I was rather cruel and tried to get it to route from my house to the hotel in Anaheim, it got to about 40% then crashed.

Sealed the floor in front of the washing machine, this is the bit Jamie soaked by overflowing the sink last week. I managed to dry most of it out with a heat gun. I’m still not happy with it. I may chop another 30mm off it and put an edging on. I’m getting very pissed off pulling the bloody washing machine in and out.

So tonight I have to cook last nights food. But bath first.

Don’t forget folks you can follow me on Twitter @mannmansion.

Also check out my new video “Prohibition and Prozac”

Lots of videos coming out in the next few weeks, just need to get round to editing them all.

Who the fuck is Thea?

After some digging I actually managed to find a link to last Sunday’s ‘Dan & Phil Show’ and indeed my video was shown from the beginning. It has a title splash for the song and then another one for ‘Video By: Thea’, who the fuck is Thea? It’s a video by me. Plus half way through there is a bit where it shows the boot screen from a DVD player, where the fuck that came from I don’t know.

Work wise I spent the day battling with a certain manufacturers SDK and failed. I gave up mid-afternoon and finished off editing a video instead. I’d already done plenty of hours this week.

Still haven’t spoken to anyone on the radio yet. I’ve listened to numerous people talking about a range of fun subjects, including, fog, traffic and resetting the bios password on a PC. Tomorrow they may discuss, mud, paint drying and bowel movements.

Captain James sent me a text, so flying tomorrow.

I spent more money on FCPX plug-ins. It’s my version of ‘QVC’, I’m turning into my mother. But I really need a smoke transition effect and professional hue colour grading.

Latest video is uploading now. Time for a bath and some wine me thinks. As I say, flying tomorrow.

Also installed new UPS. Looks nice, only just fits in the cabinet. Nut worked fine with it. Need to carry out some power off shutdown tests at some point.

No, don’t want to speak to someone who’s highlight of the day was changing a toner cartridge

Lots of things arrived. My new Sony 7506 headphones, which are fantastic. The transceiver that I only ordered yesterday arrived by midday. Took a while to get the damn thing programmed up with the local repeater but got there in the end. Logbook also arrived, so all set to go….

Except I left it on all day and just listened to people talk through the repeater. If anything could drive you to suicide then listening to these dull peoples lives would. Anyone who can bang on for almost twenty minutes about changing a photocopier toner cartridge I don’t think I could hold a conversation with. Maybe tomorrow.

I worked on fiber stuff. All successful. Then it was back to shaders.

Went to the gym and did Spin with Laverene. Came back and did some more playing around with music and then some video editing. Then sat down and tried to find old Ubuntu scripts to do with the old Belkin UPS. I need to revert all these before putting the new UPS in, as this one actually supports proper power off shutdown.

So G7IYM is licensed again

Don’t usually have too many good things to say about Ofcom, but I suppose it’s actually ‘Spectrum Licensing’ so some other off-shoot. But this morning to my surprise an envelope turned up which contained a newly issued amateur radio license. Considering all I supplied them with a couple of weeks ago was a filled in form with a few previous addresses on it. I couldn’t find any old validation documents or my original exam passes. Anyway they’ve granted me a full license, so I can tear up the airwaves at 400 watts. I won’t though, as I have no great interest in talking to very dull people about very dull subjects. I did however order a dual band UHF/VHF transceiver. This is just to do a bit of testing with so I can do my telephony exam for the PPL. I’ll see how I get on, but I expect the first few contacts I make I’ll want to murder in about ten minutes. There’s also the possibility I may bump into an old acquaintance of mine, who will save me talking as all he does is talk about himself.

I’m not even going to discuss work as it was shaders again. Took Dillon to daycare and picked him up.

Went to the gym and did Body Pump. Drank protein. Came back and did a bit more work, then a bit more video editing. My Mac was on a go-slow so gave up after a while and let it think about what ever it needed to think about. Hopefully tomorrow it will have got whatever it was out of the way.

It’s a good job there isn’t a kitchen light above Staverton

Today was all about shaders again. This is beginning to be a recurring theme. The only break I had was looking at an issue with fibers. Thankfully shader wise, this batch is pretty much finished. There is one crash in the platform compiler which I’ve had to refer back to the supplier.

My UPS arrived, I knew they said it would be securely packed, but I wasn’t expecting it to me strapped to a full-sized wooden pallet. It’s still strapped to it as I needed to order some socket converters. It isn’t going anywhere, mainly because it weighs a ton.

Went to the gym and abused the cross trainer for an hour. Came back and played around with the CX2. To cut and short flight even shorter I managed to fly it up into the kitchen light and take the bulb out, spraying glass everywhere. Wrecked the bodywork and broke the landing skids. Fifteen quid on eBay later and a new lightbulb it was time to eat salad. Still felt hungry to finished it off with macaroni cheese and toast. Avoided wine. Actually now in bed fairly early. Dillon at daycare tomorrow. I have another exciting day with shaders.

FaceBook settings, damn you

Spent ages tracing a shader compiler bug. That was the highlight of my morning. Walked Sasha. Then spent the entire afternoon editing shaders and fixing fun shader compiler errors. This week is going to be all about shaders. It’s going to be very very dull. At least it doesn’t require much brain power, it’s just iteration after iteration.

Went to the gym and did Combat. Admired my arms. Came back and did more bloody shaders. Didn’t get on to anything else, was hoping to do a bit more editing but wasn’t in the mood so sat down and caught up on some telly.

Last night when editing FaceBook permissions on a video I made it public by mistake. Mother saw it it and commented ‘Awesome!’, so she’s still alive and thinks she’s about 15.

My plasticine hasn’t turned up.
